Why I Choose To Support the Samara Centre

As a 61-year-old writer based in Ontario, I’m concerned about the cracks that are appearing in our democracy. There is too much division, increasingly separate realities, and lack of mutual understanding.

About The Samara Centre for Democracy

A non-partisan charity dedicated to strengthening Canada’s democracy. The Samara Centre  produces innovative, action-oriented research that illuminates the evidence and reforms needed to make Canadian politics more accessible, responsive, and inclusive. Through original engagement programming, we provide active citizens and public leaders with tools and resources designed to engage Canadians in their democracy.

A samara is the winged “helicopter” seed that falls from the maple tree. A symbol of Canada, it is also a reminder that from small seeds, big ideas can grow.

Our Work

Research
The basis for all that we do, our research brings forward the evidence, reforms, resources, and initiatives to drive positive change in our politics and transform our representative democracy. Action-oriented, comparative, and multilevel, this research focuses on three areas central to the health of Canada’s democracy: legislatures, political parties, and citizen participation.

Engagement Programming
Designed to amplify our research and strengthen Canada’s democracy, our programming fosters a community of active citizens and public leaders who share our commitment to driving positive change in our politics, providing the knowledge and tools to bolster their efforts. Programming includes in-person events, campaigns, conferences, and small group experiences.

Our Impact
  • Media Coverage: Our research findings are reported upon by media outlets across the country, provoking national conversations.
  • Education: Our work has been incorporated and adapted into educational materials for high school, university, and community based classrooms.
  • Inform Legislation: Our research has been cited in legislation before the House of Commons, and we are regularly invited to Parliamentary Committees to give expert testimony.
